The Dog-Eared Page, a charming indie bookstore in Holladay, celebrated their one year birthday on Saturday, March 22. Opened by owner, Laura Lewon, the DEP offers new and used books, as well as e-books, tote and book bags, and other various little goodies.
They are conveniently located next to the Great Harvest Café and, together, the two businesses have a really cool feature: a reading room that opens to both the bookstore and the café. The owners of the café built this room to encourage book lovers to sit down with a treat, and treat lovers to go browse through the books. (I love it when local stores support each other!) I didn’t visit the café on this trip, but I will definitely be returning and trying out the reading room for myself.
The store itself doesn’t feel like a traditional bookstore. Instead of rows and rows of bookshelves and harsh fluorescent lighting, the DEP is filled with natural light and plenty of open space around their displays. Don’t get me wrong, I love bookstores of any kind, but the DEP felt more inviting—it was like visiting a friend instead of shopping.
Even though the store is smaller, there is still a great selection of books. The DEP has a wonderful selection of new and used books. Lewon says she purchases her books based on the demands of the area and I was happy to find a good variety of children’s, young adult, and adult titles. The DEP also supports local authors by trying to keep their titles in stock.
While the DEP only keeps 1-2 of each book in stock, they are happy to place special orders for you—they even provide publisher’s catalogues so you can check out other titles being published this year.
The used books range in price from $1-8. While they do have some classics, they mostly carry current and/ or popular titles. They are currently seeking more used books; so, if you have a book—published no earlier than 2010—you want to trade in, bring it by for a credit.
The store is definitely kid friendly—beyond the great selection of children’s and YA novels, the DEP has a corner of the store set up with toys to occupy the kids while their parents shop. While I was there, it was fun to watch them playing throughout the store. One little boy, especially loved running up and down the slight incline from one section of the store to the other—another feature kids find entertaining, according to the staff.
Read New Releases Before Anyone Else
One of the most exciting things for me was learning about their ARC program. Advanced Reader’s Copies, or ARCs, are copies of a book that are sent to reviewers, bookstores, and librarians before the book’s release date in order to gather reviews, generate buzz about the books, and to aid booksellers and librarians in their stock-purchasing decisions. Because the staff at the DEP is small, they’ve decided to enlist the help of their customers in reviewing the ARC’s. Customers can borrow one ARC at a time, for up to one month, in exchange for writing a review. It is completely free to sign up for the ARC program. Reading a new book before it’s published, and for free? Sign me up!
Overall, I had a wonderful experience at The Dog-Eared Page. It is easy to see how much their helpful, friendly staff loves what they do. I enjoyed speaking with them as I shopped and during checkout. I left excited about my new purchases and eager to return again for more. With their great location, friendly staff, and wonderful selection, I will definitely be visiting The Dog-Eared Page again.
The Dog-Eared Page is located at 4647 S. 2300 E. in Holladay, UT. They are open Monday through Friday 11:30-5 and Saturday 11-4; they are closed on Sundays. Check them out online at http://www.thedogearedpage.info/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheDogEaredPage.
Don’t miss out! As part of their birthday celebration, almost every book in the store is on sale from March 22-March 28.
