We live in a two-story home where one of the bedrooms not only faces to the west, it also has 3 outside walls and is over the garage. As a result, the room is SUPER hot and even with dark blinds, the room just won't cool off enough to sleep in.
We opted to get one of those portable roll around air conditioners and just love it! It keeps the room nice and cool. And, saves money as we don't have to use the central air at night.
The only drawback is that it's kind of ugly the way the vent has to go to the window. We took care of this by putting a curtain that hangs over it to hide it. It's easy to install and move around from room to room or for storage. We just stick it in the closet when not in use. Ours is a Harier 12,000 btu, we got several years ago on a year end sale at Target for around $200. They have really gone up in price since then!
I spotted a similar one, Arctic King Cool Only Room Portable Air Conditioner, on sale at Walmart.com (online only) for $218 (reg. $449) and that seems like a price worth mentioning. Shipping is free or you can opt to pick it up in the store.
If you are in a similar boat this could be a great solution for you. It's a different brand than ours, but a similar unit that's the same brand, Arctic King 12,000-BTU Room Portable Air Conditioner with Supplemental 11,000-BTU Heat Pump and Remote Control (only difference it that it has heat as well) seems to have good reviews.
This Arctic King 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is lightweight and economical. The cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office. The remote control allows you to easily change settings.
