Starting a post with a subject like this leaves me tongue tied. How does one begin to blog about a subject as important as this one? A subject so important it's hard to do it justice.
Last week I had the opportunity to preview a documentary called The Abolitionist. The name is inspired by the Abolitionist movement founded in 1789 that was formed to end slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom, our nation. It was this movement that is credited for the beginning of the Civil War.
This movie however, is not about history. It addresses a different kind of slavery, the buying and selling of children into the sex trade. Every 30 seconds a child is sold into sex slavery, it's estimated that 2 million children are enslaved today. Sadly much of this goes on right within our own borders.
In the movie you'll follow Co-founder of Operation Underground Railroad (OUR) and BYU graduate, Tim Ballard along with his team, many of which are rooted right here in Utah, on a mission to free these children. Frustrated with the red tape and bureaucracy of his job at Homeland Security, Tim gave up his badge to start this amazing project going undercover and setting up sting operations to rescue these children. This story of courage and commitment is up-lifting and left me speechless, that's not an easy task.
How can you help? On May 16, The Abolitionist will be having a special one night fund raiser. Movie theaters across American are donating a portion of the proceeds to help O.U.R continue it's fight. 100% of your Larry Miller Megaplex ticket will go towards this cause. Then on May 21, you can join the Rescue Run 5K in Lehi to help even further. You can use promo code FLYER to save $3.00 or, know that by not using the code you gave another $3.00.
I'm always stunned at what humans will do to, and more importantly, do for people they don't know. I hope you will join me in becoming an Abolitionist, and be as inspired as I was after seeing this movie, knowing that your dollars spent will help save a child.
We would love for you to join our Facebook Group.
