Remember the Nielsen Home Scanner program I told you about here. Well, it looks like someone is profiting from it.
A Hip2Save reader sent this picture to her. With a note saying that she got this in her mailbox from them and all she had to do for the $30.00 was to watch TV for a week. And, log in what she watched.
The Nielsen National Consumer Panel, measures consumers attitudes and behavior in order to gather information for marketers. As a panel member you'll get a hand-held scanner. Every time you or members of your household shop, you’ll use the scanner to scan the barcodes on all of your purchases. Then, once a week, you'll hook up the scanner to your phone line or computer and the information is downloaded to them. As a reward for your time, you earn gift points that are redeemable for quality name-brand merchandise, including electronic equipment, household items, toys, and even vacation packages!
What I'm wondering is if the time it takes to make the scans is worth the gifts. If anyone has participated in this program in the past and would like to share I'd love to hear your thoughts.
If you’re interested in becoming part of the Consumer Panel, they have a great video on their website that tells more at this link here. I filled out the survey to see what it's like it didn't take long now we just wait and see.

July 14, 2010 at 4:51 pmI did participate in the shopping program for the Consumer Panel for about a month when I decided it wasn’t worth the time it took for me personally. You do have to scan each item (and they want you to record every item you buy from every store, not just groceries). Items that do not have a barcode you have to go through a somewhat time consuming process to look up in a book and then scan that barcode in. You also have to input the store you shopped at which can be time consuming as well if its a store that’s not already in the scanner. Once an item is scanned, you have to enter in how many you bought, what you paid for that item, if coupons were used, and if it was on sale. You have to go through this process with every item. AND I wasn’t getting paid $30 a week to do it either. They have a rewards catalog that I figured if I did this scanning process every week for a YEAR, I should get something equivalent to a $20-30 reward. However, it was extremely easy to opt-out and return everything with no harm done. Bottom line: too time consuming for me but maybe somebody with older kids who might enjoy scanning for them would enjoy it. Worth a shot if you think you might like it!

July 14, 2010 at 6:53 pmI wondered about that myself. I’m so glad you shared! I see these things I’ve never tried and I love to know what others experiences have been. Thanks for the info!
