Even Stevens Restaurant Review
Housed in a quirky, recycled-chic space, Even Stevens Sandwiches is “A Sandwich Shop with a Cause.” For every sandwich they sell, they donate one to a local non-profit. Currently they are working with the Good Samaritan Program, the YWCA, the Rescue Mission, and the Volunteers of America Homeless Youth Outreach.
I was really craving a good grilled cheese sandwich so I ordered the JP Grilled Cheese and the Goat Getter salad while my friend, Jenn, ordered the Do Gouda sandwich. The JP is melted white cheddar cheese with “poppin” cream cheese and garlic roasted jalapenos on French bread. Knowing I can’t handle the heat as well as others, I ordered mine sans jalapenos. The “poppin” cream cheese is actually a cream cheese jalapeno mixture that I can only describe in one way: creamy fire. Cream cheese usually diminishes the heat of peppers, but not in this spread. It tastes great, so if you love hot things you’ll enjoy the JP spread, but if you have a hard time with hot things like me, you may want to hold the spread. Heat aside, this sandwich was delicious and satisfying.
The Do Gouda sandwich is tender roast beef with smoked Gouda, sweet onion marmalade, red onion, and greens on sourdough bread. It looked delicious! I think I will try that next time—or their Capreezy (fresh mozzarella, pesto, tomatoes, arugula, and balsamic glaze on sourdough bread). They also have a breakfast menu with stuffed French toast and breakfast burritos.
At about $10 for my meal, this restaurant is really quite comparable in price to other lunch venues downtown—especially when considering that the price is actually for TWO meals, not one. So, what are you waiting for? Go and enjoy a delicious sandwich and feel good knowing you’ve done a good deed.
