Have you ever purchased an item at a Trade Show or Fair event on a whim from oneĀ of those fast talking demonstrations? I have had some pretty bad experiences with these products. My last “sucker” purchase was a Gratty, save the money if you are ever tempted.
This year at the Utah State Fair, I found myself, once again, at the demonstration table. There was a nice old man watching the demonstration with me, where we enjoyed the peeling finesse of of a fast taking salesman showing us “The Worlds Best Peeler” which we could get for the “today only cash price of $20″.
Now, I have to say, the demonstrator had vegetable peeling skills I personally, will probably never achieve, but this was an item I was in need of. My favorite old rusty peeler had just bit the dust. Hum, should I get one? After all the nice old man next to me just did and a Kitchen Aid peeler is $10! Plus, if I “buy right now, this very minute, with cash, I'll get a FREE shredder too”. SUCKER? or maybe not…..
Alrighty, home I go with my new found treasure, and this time I do mean treasure. I love these peelers? The picture above can really speak for itself. It tackles Butternut Squash like nobody's business. One pull with little pressure and the skin is off. I haven't tried it yet, but the “Ringmaster of Peelers” was very proficient at making it work on Pineapple too.
And, lets not leave out the shredder tool, pull it along the veggie of your choice, potatoes, squash, carrots and more and viola, perfect little shreds. It works best on dry veggies, cucumbers seem to clog it up.
I just now sauteed up my tasty demonstration for lunch.Ā A little olive oil, salt & pepper and done, add last nights chicken or some kidney beans if you want a little protein. Delicious!
Both peelers also work on cheese. I love the slicer for cheese and use it all the time for my cheese slicing tasks. The grater is okay for small jobs but won't replace your good old box grater.
I have no idea how long this little treasures super sharp blades will last, but it does have a āLifetime guaranteeā Tee hee! Based on the sharpness of the blades, I think it will be around for a while.
Okay, so as things go, of coarse these peelers are less money than you can get under the “Big Tent” or on late night TV. There are several sellers on Ebay here that have them listed. And, just a note, I found NO use for the “handy Mandolin tool” it's awkward and flimsy.
This seller here, has the identical set I got for $8.95 with free shipping (limited supply). Be sure to check out any sellers rating before making your purchase.
Happy Peeling!

November 3, 2012 at 5:42 pmYears ago my husband came home from a trade show with a vitamix blender. I about killed him when he said he paid almost $400 for it! Well I love him more for that purchase every day, when I hand him his smoothie made in that same blender. Don’t know what I would do without it!
The grater looks great!!

November 1, 2012 at 1:01 pmI got a free knife at Walmart for listening to the demonstration. I resisted buying what they were selling but it was worth it for a good little knife for free.

November 1, 2012 at 11:09 amI’ve never been sucked into a “big tent” purchase, but have done some late night infomercial purchases- my favorite was/is a set of knives I got 12 years ago. They were $30 for two sets (we gave one to my parents for Christmas) and they have just gotten to the point where they are wearing out enough (and we’ve lost/misplaced enough) to consider getting a new set. Not bad for essentially $15 for a knife set, huh?!
I will admit, I’ve eyed this peeler a number of times, but never succumbed to temptation because it seemed too good to be true. Now that I’ve seen a “real” review, I may just give into that “big tent” purchase… just not in the big tent! š Thanks for the very helpful review!

November 1, 2012 at 10:33 amMy sister was talked into letting someone come to her house for a demonstration to get a free kitchen item, but they insisted that they be allowed to come when her husband would be there too. So even though it was inconvenient they scheduled a time, sat around all night waiting, and the people never showed. Then they finally called and said they couldn’t make it and wanted to reschedule, and again insisted that they wouldn’t come during the day when it was convenient for her. So she finally told them never mind.
I’m excited to see if it would really work on pineapple!

November 1, 2012 at 7:27 amI purchased a Geigerrig pressurized hydration backpack. It was a little pricey but I have loved it so far. It has a filter they sold me for $5 that can attach. Really handy if you run out of water on a long hike.

November 1, 2012 at 7:12 amThe one time I ever bought a “Big Tent” item was a Shami at the fair. This was when they first came out before all the infomercials. Let’s just say that it is no coincidence that this product has the word “Sham” in it.
I recently saw the old rusty peeler my mother was using with her arthritic hands. A new peeler would be perfect for her. I am definitely going to check these out for her. Thanks for the review.

October 31, 2012 at 8:58 pmMy biggest as-seen-on-tv flops was a steamer. My wife thought we would save so much money on dry cleaning. The only wrinkles the steamer gets out are the same wrinkles that begin to lay flat just with normal wear. Hopefully we won’t make that mistake again. Thanks for having a great site!

October 31, 2012 at 4:47 pmI just had to “try” peeling a squash with my old peeler… Didn’t work out so well. That one looks amazing!
As for the brownie pan with the seperation piece, its a major flop! They stick to it badly and you will end up with a plateful of brownie pieces. Tastes great over ice cream though!

October 31, 2012 at 4:41 pmI am in desperate need of a new peeler. I think I may have thrown mine out with the veggie peels recently. š
This would make our gluten free cooking so much easier.
“Big Tent” flops – we bought a nail stencil kit at the state fair a few years back. They made it look so easy but it wasn’t and we paid far more than we could have bought it elsewhere. Oh well – live and learn.
