As many of you know, this website was developed as a family project; little hobby, designed to bring our family together with a common interest. When we started the site we had no idea where it would lead or what direction it would take.
As we end our second year, I've been thinking about how I could utilize this little website of ours to help the community. Recently, I learned about a small group of our readers that spend a great deal of their lives in medical treatment. I have to say, I was touched beyond words when I met the leader of the pack, Heidi.
Kidney disease is a life-changing event. Living with its symptoms and being on dialysis impacts many aspects life. It takes a toll on family, friends, work and even self-image. Dialysis patients spend an average of 3 hours a day 3 times a week getting what they laughingly refer to as an “oil change”. There are many causes, but most often the kidney failure has come as a side effect of diabetes. Even with good health insurance, at an average cost of $3,000 per week, it is often financially devastating.
Heidi and her pack use their coupons to donate the goods that they can to the 97 patients receiving treatment at the Central Valley Dialysis Center located in Murray. This generous woman brings them razors, dish soap, lotions and even toilet paper. These items that we take for granted, that the average Couponer gets FREE or pretty darn cheap, are precious gifts to some of these folks that are struggling day to day.
I was introduced to Heidi by email. She reached out to me with well wishes for my Hubby when he was hospitalized back in August. This wonderful stranger wanted to know if she could help. It was the first time I realized how our little family project was affecting people I've never met. When I finally met Heidi she seemed a bit starstruck. I felt very humbled as I am the one that's starstruck. You see Heidi is one of the dialysis patients.

November 25, 2011 at 9:39 pmWhat an amazing project! I was on Dialysis for almost two years before receiving a transplant. I recieved my kidney transplant 4 years ago at the age of 31. I have been able to have 2 beautiful baby girls since then thanks to my new kidney and second chance at life. Dialysis is very challenging. It is tolerated better by some patients, but for me, it completely deteriorated my bones and muscles and I had to relearn how to walk and still have trouble walking. Not only is dialysis physically and financially challenging, it is emotinally challenging. I saw a few other patients pass away while on dialysis and I always wondered if life was worth living if I was dependant upon a machine for life. Kudos to you for this project and to those who support it. It will mean a lot to those who are truly in need.

November 24, 2011 at 7:01 pmI was able to spend the morning at Walgreens and came away with a ton of stuff on the needs list. It was a great way to spend Thanksgiving and a good lesson of giving back to my kids. Will the center be open tomorrow? Do I drop the donations and my entry for the kindle there? Let me know.
thx for all you do, I have told everyone about Coupons4Utah and how much I have learned over the last few months.

November 23, 2011 at 6:13 pmOh I am soo excited!!! I am a dialysis tech at central valley dialysis and Heidi is the one that introduced me to world of couponing, and your blog. Over the last year I have cut our grocery bill almost in half, all while adding the expenses of a baby, and I have been able to save up enough stuff to make donations to the dialysis center. It feels soo great to save money and to be in a position to help those in need. Thank you for everything that you do!!!
