It's something most of us dreamed of as a child, riding horses, being performers and imagining the freedom of galloping over fences; maybe even doing some trickery, like standing up while riding, singing or acrobatics. If this sounds like a fairy tail dream from your childhood, you aren't alone.
If you live in the Salt Lake Valley, chances are you've seen the 125 foot tall White Big Top jutting up in the South Town Mall parking lot. It covers 47,000 square feet and at night they are quite beautiful. Inside the enormous tent are seats for 2000 guests all bringing offered a great view. The stage is amazing, it spans 35,000 square feet, is covered in a whopping 6,000 tons of dirt. I learned that the mix is a carefully selected sand mixed with fiber. This is to ensure that the footing for the 65 horses and 50 human performers.
I was recently invited to Cavalia's special opening night where I was treated to a special dinner in the Rendez-vous tent, center stage seating, desserts and beverages at intermission, and even a stable tour after the show. I was hooked.
If your budget allows, consider getting this VIP experience ticket. It will turn your evening into an upscale event. VIP ticket holders receive a pre-show dinner buffet that includes various salads, as well as chicken and steak entree's, complimentary beverages that include soda, juice, wine and beer, dessert during intermission and popcorn for the show.
You'll also get a tour of the stables after the performance. While I did consider the buffet a bit average and somewhat taste specific, the total VIP experience is neat. If your budget doesn't allow for the extravagance, don't sweat it, there really isn't a bad seat in the house.
From beginning to end you will be mesmerized and feel transformed into another world where man is innocent, horses are magical and time is still. With all live performances in general, especially one like this, there are infinite opportunities for things to go wrong, and on occasions things did go off course.
In one of the scenes, horses are free to roam about with their human partners, at one point one horse decided he would go rogue. This blip in the performance just gave the horse that much more character and at the end he received a standing ovation. A lesson of imperfection being perfect is something we humans can all learn.
Cavalia's OdysseO was more stunning than I could have imagined. It's so much more than a evening of entertainment. OdysseO transports you into a fantasy world of man and horse that one only imagines in their dreams. The powerful horses, detailed choreography and live music make it a true masterpiece that will mystify all ages. It is a definitely a magnificent bang for your buck.
