The dollar store can be a great place to shop. These stores have everything you need for any type of party, dishes, personal care, toys and more. It's fun to browse and doing so can often yield some great items for the money. But, not everything in their aisles are worth the buck.
First to note there are several dollar stores in Utah and the products vary from store to store. The products and images in this post are from Dollar Tree. Here's a list of some of my do's and do not's for the dollar store along with a special warning.

Food:
While browsing the dollar store you may occasionally come across a good bargain on food. However, overall I'd suggest you stick to the grocery store for your grocery shopping. Some things may not be what you think.
For example, at first glance, I thought this honey bear was a pretty good deal. But, on closer inspection, I found this was actually honey flavored corn syrup and a bottle of vanilla flavored extract, contained only sugar and caramel and no vanilla at all. Also, when considering oz. for oz. most of the food items I found were a much better purchase at the grocery store, that, in many cases is right in the same shopping complex.
I will add exception to some candy items however. Dollar store goodies include movie theater style candy, Worther's original, and Mars and Hershey products. However, most of these items can also be found at the regular store for the same price.
Last, it's buyer beware for some dollar store items, according to a recent article (4/28/2015) in Women's Day magazine. They report the top 10 most hazardous items at the dollar store. Stating that many items tested contained hazardous chemicals. The article is vague about if these same items purchased elsewhere are safer than those from dollar store sources, leaving me feel as if it's one sided. I suggest you do your own research and always read the labels and avoid the purchase if you are concerned. Check out the full article here.
What are your dollar store do's and font's?

July 28, 2015 at 8:15 amMuch of the packaging at the dollar store is smaller. Same candy elsewhere might be priced higher, but has more ounces. Also, if you do buy candy at the dollar store, stick to name brands. Off-brand candy is disgusting and a waste of money & calories. Palmers & Elmers chocolates are absolutely gross. Garden seeds are a popular item in the spring, but again, there are a lot less seeds in dollar store packets. Just because it’s a dollar, doesn’t make it a good deal. Thanks for the post.

July 27, 2015 at 12:56 pmI don’t buy the canned goods there, because you can typically get them cheaper at a grocery store. However, I love to buy their canned fish like smoked oysters and smoked clams-they are good quality and great price. I also buy the spices there that I am always running out of (however do check for msg in things like poultry seasoning, or lemon pepper) if you are sensitive. I love buying minced garlic and pickles there, can’t beat the garlic price. I do buy zip baggies with the understanding that they won’t be the highest quality-but since they are usually used once and then tossed, it’s not a huge issue for me. I love the wall stickers for decorating rooms. I buy some of the vitamins, like fish oil, vit c, and calcium. I still get the same “fishy burps” with the cheap oil pills as i do with the expensive ones, so I figure they can’t be too far off. I always get children’s tylenol there, it works the same at a better price; and i get the tylenol there for me…still no problems. I love their cough syrup. The pregnancy tests are surprisingly accurate! I like to get the batteries especially for the noisy kids toys that I wouldn’t cry too hard about if they batteries died suddenly and quickly. I get my deodorants there, and their soft winter socks make for great christmas gifts. I got some charging wires there that still work well. I also purchased some toilet soap one day because I only had a buck to spend, and while I didn’t really like the soap it was the first soap to ever clean the stains out of the toilets that had been there forever. no problems with dustpans and brooms, and toilet brushes. I think you are correct, though. You need to do your research before you buy anything to make sure you are getting quality and a good price…sometimes that is easier said than done, and products change frequently. What may be good one day will just be trashy the next.
