For a lot of young families, purchasing diapers takes up a big chunk of the monthly budget. Trying store-brand diapers that work for your child can be one good way to save on them. For others who prefer brand name or have to use them for medical reasons, finding a good sale and stocking up can be the way to go. But how do you know what a good price is for diapers? Here's are some guidelines.
What Is A Good Price for Diapers?
Retail price for a size 3 brand name diaper is anywhere from $0.27/diaper to $0.35/diaper, depending on the variety of the diaper and the retailer you purchase them from. I try to aim for a sale price of about $0.17 or $0.18/diaper for size 3, which is about 40% to 50% off. At this price, I will stock up two or three BIG boxes at a time. Keep in mind that smaller sizes will have more diapers per pack and will therefore be less $ per diaper. Larger sizes will have less diapers per pack and will consequently cost more per diaper. But using this rule of thumb for size 3 can help make some sense of the madness.
This rule of thumb pricing is used for Huggies and Pampers sales, so you should aim for a store brand price lower than this if you are a store brand diaper user!
Is a good diaper price attainable these days?
Yes! Even with the package sizes going down and the prices going up, great sales can still be found. It just helps to be educated so you can spot a good sale when you see it.
Where is the best place to find a good sale on diapers?
Right now the best places to find a good diaper sale are Amazon, Costco (when they have a coupon for them) and Babies R Us (during special promos). But don’t discount other store sales (Target, Walgreens) and clearance finds in-store. It helps to always have your Pampers & Huggies coupons clipped and with you at all times! There are also advantages to being able to buy a HUGE box of diapers at a good price (Amazon, Babies R Us) for the long haul and some smaller packs at a good price (Target, Walgreens) for when your child might be transitioning sizes. It may work best for you to take advantage of both varieties of sales.
What if I don’t subscribe to the Amazon Mom service?
The Amazon Mom subscription generally will not pay for itself each year if all you are purchasing from Amazon is diapers. (Which is why I don’t pay for it!) But even without Amazon Mom, you can get free shipping and 5% off using the subscribe and save option. (Plus the no tax is a great bonus!) The $0.17/diaper pricepoint can still be met at Amazon this way. Keep in mind that Amazon prices change rapidly throughout the day so you have to grab Amazon diaper deals quick before they sell out.
I will be posting good diaper sales as they pop up in the coming weeks, so check back here often or subscribe via email so you won’t miss it!

October 3, 2012 at 7:26 amI never pay more than $.09 per diaper for size 3. I used to get Huggies all the time, but it’s been at least a year since I’ve gotten them. For the last year I’ve gotten this price on Pampers, Luvs & 7th Generation. I buy diapers about 4 times a year when I can get this price and usually get around 300 diapers each time. I never buy store brand diapers as I have yet to find one that works. In the last year I have gotten this price at Walgreens.com, Walgreens, K-mart, & Rite-Aid. Once or twice a year I’ll find P&G Rebates and Kimberly Clark Promotions to help get diapers for even cheaper and sometimes free. But if you have to have Huggies diapers, not slip-ons, I’ve seen them for as low as $.13/diaper for size 3. Make sure to check the diaper quantity when shopping. I think people miss this assume all stores boxes are the same and overpay and miss some great sales!
